Two Michigan Tigers Futbol Club teams were crowned champions of the highly competitive Nike Challenge Cup, held April 28 and 29 in Dublin, Oh.
The Michigan Tigers '99 Gold (pictured at left above), coached by Divi Neto, took a 3-0 record into the final, where they faced host Club Ohio. A first half goal by David in which he outmuscled the Club Ohio goalkeeper gave the Michigan Tigers a 1-0 lead, but an early second half goal by the opponents tied the game. With the score tied 3-3 and one shooter left, Sebastian stepped to the line and calmly buried the fourth and winning goal, sending the Tigers to the top of the podium.
The Michigan Tigers '98 Gold (pictured at right above), al so coached by Divi Neto, tied their opening game of the tournament 2-2 before going on a roll, winning their next two games by a combined 10-3 score. The 2-0-1 record was enough to get them into the finals, where Hammer FC awaited them. The Michigan Tigers came out on fire, scoring three goals in the opening half (one each by Samuel S. Nicolas, and Noah) before adding a fourth by Samuel S. in the second half in route to a 4-0 victory.

Michigan Tigers 2nd Annual Tournament
April 21st, 2012
at WideWorld Sports Center
The second annual Michigan Tigers Futbol Club tournament took place on April 21, pitting each of the 40 teams against "opponents" from other Michigan Tigers squads. Thirty-five minute games took place at WideWorld Sports Center from 8:30AM to 9:30PM, with many of the players sporting face and body paint as they celebrated graceful goals, outstanding defensive plays, and sprawling saves.
While on the field the teams competed fiercely, off the field players from all teams and ages joined in support of parents and coaches alike in the annual "Parents vs. Coaches Game." The coaches opened a 5-0 lead before the parents mounted a furious comeback, closing the gap to 5-3. In the end though, Coach Minem and Coach Marcelo were too strong, leading the coaches to a 7-4 victory.
We want to thank all the volunteers, sponsors, players, and families for making this event enjoyable and fun.

U9 Boys Capture Nike Cup
The Michigan Tigers U9 Boys Gold team captured Dublin, Ohio’s Nike Cup Championship on May 1, 2011, avenging an earlier loss to Metro FC Rapids (Dayton, OH) in the final, 4 - 3. The team was led throughout the tournament by the goalkeeping of Caleb Shoup, timely goal scoring of Gabriel Kellman, Nicholas Showich, and Max Miller, and stonewall defending of Leo Gabaron and Christopher Emerson.
A 2 – 1 record was enough for the Michigan Tigers to advance from their group to the final, where a rematch with Metro FC stood between the Tigers and the championship trophy. After giving up the opening goal of the game, the Tigers fought back with two goals of their own; a well-placed shot from Max Miller and a corner kick from Leo Gabaron, to lead 2 – 1. A Metro FC goal briefly tied the game, but a rocket from Nicholas Showich gave the Tigers a 3 – 2 lead, and a perfect combination play between David Saakov and Shaunak Bhagat, ultimately finished by Bhagat, gave the Tigers a 4-2 lead they wouldn’t give up. Although Metro FC added a third goal to bring them within one, they were unable to tie the game thanks to the outstanding goalkeeping of Shoup.
Coach Nishan Artinian lauded forwards Gabrial Kellman, Max Miller, and Shaunak Bhagat for constantly making the correct attacking runs, and midfielders Nicholas Showich, Conleth Stead, and David Saakov for finding them over and over again. But defense wins championships, and the play of Jarrett Sung, Christopher Emerson, Leo Gabaron, and Nicholas Rock, over the course of the entire tournament, allowed the Michigan Tigers U9 Boys Gold team to bring the trophy back to Ann Arbor.
